Artificial Intelligence (AI) can serve as a powerful learning partner when used responsibly. This policy outlines the expectations I have for my students on how and when they may use AI.
Permitted Uses: AI as a Study Partner
Students are encouraged to leverage approved AI tools as supportive study aids:
* Test Review: Creating practice questions, flashcards, and study guides to prepare for quizzes and exams.
* Topic Comprehension: Requesting simplified explanations, analogies, or alternative perspectives to clarify difficult concepts introduced in class.
* Project Brainstorming: Exploring project ideas, developing research questions, or outlining creative directions to pursue.
Prohibited Uses: AI as a Substitute
AI must never stand in for authentic student effort. The following practices are strictly forbidden:
* Writing Assignments: Generating, co-writing, or paraphrasing sentences, paragraphs, essays, or report text using AI. All submitted writing must be the student's original work.
* Completing Homework: Using AI to directly answer, solve, or complete homework problems or daily assignments.
* Taking Assessments: Accessing AI tools during tests or quizzes.
Misrepresenting AI-generated output as original work constitutes academic dishonesty and will result in disciplinary action. Use AI to illuminate your thinking, never to replace it.
Part of what makes you unique is your mind and your thought processes. Education is designed to help you excerise your ability to think and reason, to create and assess. Don't short-change yourself by handing those processes off to a machine.
